OASBY: Sunshine, surprises & Sport Relief

After the weather forced the cancellation of the first day, the popular early season event, Oasby Horse Trials, near Grantham (March 10th-13th) gave, what many competitors have labelled, “the best going ever” coupled with beautiful blue skies whilst they raised over £1000 for Sport Relief.

Bede Events, donated a £1 per starter and are also auctioning a limited edition Sport Relief T-shirt signed by the likes of 4* Paul Tapner, Andrew Heffernan and team GBR squad members Ollie Townend and Nicola Wilson among many others.

The programme, rosettes and competitor numbers were all Sport Relief branded for the competition encouraging everyone to join in the fun and help Bede hit their target.

Friday

Friday’s classes read like a 4* register with 16 out of the top 20 riders competing regularly at the likes of Burghley and Badminton. Paul Tapner’s Belton bound Yogi Bear VIII continued his winning streak with a convincing win in the Open Intermediate.

Tom March and usual mount of his pregnant partner Piggy French, Jump Jet III, gave a first class performance in the Intermediate Section G adding just 6.4 time faults to his dressage score much to Tom’s surprise.

Saturday

Saturday’s Charles Owen sponsored Pony Trial offered a mixed bag with Frickley Park’s Connie Warde-Aldem taking the top prize. Claiming that Oasby has always been his lucky event with this weekend being no exception, local rider Richard Coney of Honnington Grange, Grantham walked away with a win after coming in just 1 second under the time in the strongly contested Open Novice.

Sunday

The final day brought sunshine through the early morning fog to offer a glorious finish to a fabulous three days of competition. Serial BEDE Events volunteer Sarah Charnley recorded her first win of the season in BE90 Section W after a few ‘airs above graces’ in the dressage warm up, with very local rider, Colston Bassett’s Amelia Scholl recording a win in BE100 Section S1 by coming in bang on the optimum Cross Country time.

If you would like to give to the cause, Bede’s just giving page is still accepting donations and can be found here http://my.rednoseday.com/sponsor/teambede and the limited edition signed t-shirt will be auctioned here with ALL proceeds going directly to Sport Relief over the next 5 days.
