In the glorious, much-anticipated new novel from Jilly Cooper, her best-loved leading man Rupert Campbell-Black returns to take centre stage in the cut-throat world of flat racing.

First introduced in Riders in 1985, Rupert has been regularly voted as one of literature’s most attractive yet unsuitable men. In Mount! the silver fox is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey stallion, be proclaimed champion stallion or Leading Sire, making him champion trainer of the year.

He longs to trounce Roberto’s Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested arch rival Cosmo Rannaldini and this involves him raging around the world embroiled in sabotage, skulduggery and bad behaviour of every conceivable variety, endangering his marriage in the process.

Mount! is vintage Cooper storytelling, the tenth in the Rutshire chronicle romance series that opens with a historical prologue to the feuding that takes place. With a host of wonderful characters – both 18th century and contemporary – readers will meet many old friends and their families as well some heart-warming new ones, with sex a-plenty, from bonking in barns to fumbles in Ferraris.

As always, the horses are characters in their own right, and the affectionate and entertaining way Jilly describes them will strike a chord with animal lovers everywhere. She also undertook her customary research into the world in which she writes.

As Jilly explains:

“I was fascinated by the breeding side of racing. Seeing adorable foals born, and that the most ferocious all-powerful stallion could be an absolute wuss in the covering barn, only able to perform if the practise mare was watching him, or the vet standing by to hold his hoof.

Nothing is more beautiful than a racehorse, but I have to confess a very soft spot for my ongoing hero, Rupert Campbell-Black and enjoyed having him centre stage, often behaving disgracefully, throughout Mount! There are also lots of very cool dogs.

The lovely thing about writing Mount! was that having written Jump! and fallen madly in love with all the people and horses in jump racing, I found the flat racing crowd –
as I pursued their antics around the world – were equally enchanting, glamorous and seductively generous with their hospitality.”

What people are saying:

“Jilly Cooper’s writing is hilarious, witty, wise, astute, flawlessly entertaining and a celebration of all that is the most fun about being British.”

HELEN FIELDING

“Joyful and mischievous. I know of no woman my age who won’t admit that Rupert Campbell-Black nearly ruined them for other men for life.”
