Sir Peter O’Sullevan CBE (1918-2015) was best known as ‘the voice of racing’ in his role as a British horse racing commentator for the BBC from 1947 to 1997. Outside of broadcasting Sir Peter carried out an abundance of charitable work in general and for animal welfare in particular. He founded the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust in 1997 and when he passed away in July 2015 much of his estate was left to the Trust.

New Beginnings is just one of many charities to benefit from his generosity and passion for animal welfare through applying for grants to support their own work to improve the lot of many animals.

“We think Sir Peter would be delighted at the thought of a horsebox going back and forth around Yorkshire and beyond bearing his name, particularly knowing that the lives of former racehorses were being improved as a result,” said Kevin Atkinson of New Beginnings.

He continued:

“Our own fundraising efforts ensure we manage the day-to-day running of our operation but we are hugely grateful for additional grants such this. Everything we receive goes directly to ensuring the welfare of the horses in, and coming in to, our care.”

The main aim of New Beginnings is to provide a safe and secure environment where former racehorses can adjust and be re-trained for their second career following racing. A positive future for each New Beginnings horse is guaranteed with on-going support available to anyone loaning a horse from the charity, which operates a policy to ensure the welfare of each horse until the end of its natural life.

As part of its fundraising activity the charity is once again hosting the New Beginnings Annual Charity Ball at York Racecourse on February 25 and ALL ARE WELCOME. The event starts at 7pm on and includes a drinks reception, three-course meal with Live Music, featuring The Maestros, a charity auction, raffle, bar and dancing until the small hours. All for a ticket price of just £55 per person, or £495 for a table of 10.
