Event riders have the chance to practice their skills ahead of the forthcoming eventing season at the first of Pontispool Equine Sports’ Centre’s arena cross country competitions.

Held in the three acre Wychanger all-weather arena, a series of  about 26 jumping efforts with 18 cross country fences and eight showjumps will face competitors, including a water jump, ditches and banks.

The courses have been designed by top international event rider Lucy McCarthy (nee Wiegersma) with classes set at 0.80m, 0.90m and 1m with alternative fences available at the more difficult options.

The competitions will take place on January 16, which will include a 1.10m class, February 6 and February 27 with the 0.90m and 1m heights qualifiers for British Eventing’s Kent & Masters Arena Eventing Championships which take place at Blair Castle International Castle from August 25th to 28th and Blenheim Palace International from 8th to 11th September.

Entries close on the Tuesday prior to each competition.

Organiser Richard Mitford-Slade said: “It’s a great opportunity for riders to compete over cross country fences on an artificial surface before the season gets going in the early spring. We have every type of fence, from trakheners to a water complex.

It’s also a great opportunity for spectators to come along and catch up with friends.”

Pontispool’s sponsored rider Alex Bragg added: “The arena cross country fences are perfect as a pipe opener before the season starts.

The competitions will also give riders the chance to school their horses in a competition environment. There’s every type of fence, all on an exceptional surface.

I take my young horses to Pontispool a lot and all the fences are very inviting.”
