Over 40 riders from around Britain tackled the first running of a brand new riding challenge — The Dartmoor Derby, including BBC broadcaster Sara Cox. Riders travelled from as far afield as Austria, Essex and the Isle of Wight.

They tackled 50 miles in guided teams supported by ground crews over three days from 23-26 September. Half brought their own horses, with others renting experienced local mounts through the organisers.

Participants stayed either in a luxury, purpose-built camp, or at top local hotels, with horses accommodated in a specially built horse station. The event also raised £1,887 for its chosen charity, the British Horse Society.

Founder Elaine Prior, who also has an established adventure riding business on Dartmoor, Liberty Trails said:

“We’ve been so pleased that this new riding adventure has attracted interest from around the world.

So many people relish the chance to properly explore on horseback this iconic natural wonder in a safe, guided and very comfortable way. We are thrilled that several riders are already planning to return next year and look forward to developing this event further in 2017.”

2016 Dartmoor Derby rider Millie Foote from Oxfordshire said:

“This was the experience of a lifetime. What a brilliant three days I had riding my horse across beautiful and austere Dartmoor.”

Sara Cox added:

“It was completely awesome; I loved it.”
