On Friday evening we caught up with Team GB rider Gemma Tattersall who had a super day in the novice classes, reflected on her experience at Rio 2016 and commented as news of Nick Skelton’s Gold Medal;

‘I brought five lovely young mares and was competing in the novice and intermediate. Three 7 year olds and two 8 year olds and they’ve all gone really well and I’ve one a few prizes so I’m really happy.’

‘Its a really long way for us to travel to Somerford Park but I’m always confident that the courses are really good, always educational, the ground is always good and I love jumping on the Andrews Bowen surface – its amazing. Plus I always seem to win prizes here so I always love coming!’

Talking about her Rio experience:

‘The most incredible experience, being part of an Olympics Games is something we all dream of doing and I learnt an incredible amount, myself, my horse – competing.

‘The facilities at Rio were amazing and it was an incredible experience – just really gutted not to have done better but we all came away with tough sound horses that jumped really well on the last day and we were all really happy.

As we spoke on Friday the news came through that Nick Skelton and Big Star had won individual Gold medal at Rio,

‘I was there when he had that fence down in London I was sitting in the crowd and everyone was in tears so to come back and go to Rio and win Gold is just incredible – I can’t believe it! It’s awesome!

Friday’s overnight leader in the CIC2* Oliver Townend and MHS King Joules retained their lead for most of Saturday only to be overtaken by another of Oliver’s rides – Note Worthy – finishing on a dressage score of 37.8. Oliver said:

‘It’s always tricky going first, but I was very pleased with the early morning dressage score, and even more pleased with Note Worthy taking the lead on Saturday – to have overnight 1st and 2nd was great.’

‘Somerford Park is the all round best training and eventing facilities in the country, and they always put on an excellent event, providing great tracks and superb going. I train here a lot and to have it on my doorstep is a bonus’.

Overnight lead in the CIC1* went to Caroline Powell and Flipper K who finished on a super dressage score of 33.8.

We witnessed superb entries in the BE100 and novice classes producing some excellent results. Somerford Park based rider Tyler Cassells picked up to wins in the BE100. The weekend proving particularly successful for Izzy Taylor who clinched another win in the novice section R, and as well as overnight 1st and 2nd on the 2* leaderboard Oliver Townend piked up a win in the novice section S with Fernhill Freestyle.
