The hallowed turf of the Surrey course is normally reserved for elite thoroughbreds and professional jockeys.
Epsom Downs hosts a Superheroes Return Family Fun Day on August 28th, Bank Holiday Monday, with racing and free children’s entertainment, including zip wires, bouncy castles, kids races and much more. In the morning eight local trainers are also throwing their doors open to the public to see behind the scenes at racing stables. At both events children go free.
And to celebrate the special event, Epsom Downs Racecourse invited a number of youngsters to bring their ponies for a once in a lifetime opportunity to ride in front of the grandstand, dressed as Batman, Superman, Robin and a host of other crusaders.
Tens of thousands of people roar on the winner of the Investec Derby at Epsom each June. But with an empty course the lucky children, selected from nearby towns and villages, were given free rein to enjoy the facilities and give an ex-racehorse, Ambivalent About (also known as Amber), a run for her money too.
Evie Tozer, aged six, brought her Miniature Shetland pony Jim Jam 20 miles from Chertsey.
“It was amazing to ride on the racetrack at Epsom. Jim Jam and I may be small but we are brave and weren’t at all scared by the racehorse.”
And Ruby Beams, aged eight from Walton on the Hill went head to head with Ambivalent About and WON!
“My pony, Gem loved it on the racecourse. She is super speedy, I knew she’d be able to beat a racehorse!”
Simon Durrant, General Manager at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said he was delighted to give the youngsters the chance to experience some of the thrills of racing.
“Our Superheroes Return Family Fun Day is always a hugely popular event but we wanted to do something special to give some of our local youngsters the chance to ride on the course itself, which we obviously can’t do on a raceday.”
“Everyone had a fantastic time and it was great to see the smiles on everyone’s faces – even if seeing nine superheroes taking on a jockey and a racehorse did come as a bit of a shock to some of our staff on the morning.”
The Epsom Trainers’ Open day starts at 8.30am with a demonstration from horses exercising on the gallops, followed by visits to the yards from 9.30am. The racecourse opens at 11.30am, with the first race at 2.05pm. There will be a range of free children’s entertainment. Under 18s go for FREE.
