Chard horse breeder, Chris Hood’s dressage colt foal, Force Majeure (For Romance x Stedinger) scored an elite premium of 9.45.  Futurity evaluator Katy Holder-Vale was particularly impressed with the colt’s uphill, supple and balanced paces.

An elite Futurity premium indicates that the horse has the potential and outlook to perform at international level.

Force Majeure is owned and was bred by Chris, a management consultant who is in just her second year of breeding. She said:

“We knew he was special when he was born. His dam, Summertime attained a higher first Futurity premium as a two-year-old and then sustained an injury as a five-year-old so we started breeding from her.”

Summertime bred a colt by Woodlander Wild Child last year that has been sold to Spain.

Chris plans to take Force Majeure to Germany for stallion licensing with the Oldenburgs and he will then eventually compete and hopefully get on to the equine pathway.  Chris continued:

“The Futurity is good for British breeders, it provides an honest evaluation of the horse’s future potential. There are things you cannot change, but can improve in future bloodlines. There are now some amazing British bred horses out there and as many of us breeders no longer ride, we are breeding for riders who will make the most of our horses.”

Kari Christopher of the Vorvashill Stud in St Ives scored a higher first premium of 8.80 with her colt foal, Vorvashill Enigma (Forinth x Dutch Falco) in the jumping section. The Vorvashill Stud is a small sport horse stud run by Kari who said:

“We are a small, family run operation and to have our young horses recognised at a national level is brilliant. I am really pleased with Vorvashill Enigma – who we call Arthur – he is only 6 weeks old and an amazing colt.”

Arthur was bred from Kari’s mare, Last Flame, by Dutch Falco. Karo continued:

“Last Flame has bred some super foals for us over the years.  Her son, Vorvashill Vertigo, who is now 5 is out being placed at British Eventing competitions.  Both Vertigo and another son of Last Flame, Chicago Flame have done really well at the Futurity.  Last Flame is now 23 so Arthur is her last foal.”

Vorvashill Enigma is by Forinth. Kari plans to keep him and he will go out competing.

Cullompton endurance rider, Karen Jones scored a higher first premium of 8.80 in the endurance section with her two-year-old filly, Seren Sarella (Winged Saint x Hanson) who was bred by Dominic and Jan Atkinson of Seren Arabians in Cumbria.

Karen said:

“I am over the moon with Sarella, it is the first time I have been to the Futurity and she was brilliant. She is a very nice little horse and I have competed some of her family so am really looking forward to riding her in a couple of years. The horses bred by Dom and Jan Atkinson are big boned horses that have lovely movement and can do any job. I went up to their stud in Cumbria to buy a horse called Seren Hanau and bought Sarella too.”

Karen recently won the 130km Cirencester Endurance ride on another horse by Winged Saint, Treasured Moonbeam. He is now being aimed at the 160km Red Dragon ride at the end of the season.

Alison Trezies from Tiverton completed the top scores across the disciplines at Tall Trees with her three-year-old eventer, New Star (Wish Upon A Star x Trans Island). This bay gelding came home with a higher first premium of 8.75.
