Champagne Pol Roger hosts ‘Bits vs Balls Challenge’

International Event Riders vs International Rugby Union players, in aid of Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony Charity.

Champagne Pol Roger has been a longstanding supporter of the worlds of Three Day Eventing ‘bits’ and Rugby ‘balls’. It is proud to be the official Champagne of both the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, and Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials as well as the official Champagne of Bath Rugby.

Whilst Three Day Eventing and Rugby Union remain very different sporting disciplines, they share a number of similarities in style and values. Both sports are steeped in vibrant history and heritage, with athletes competing in a punishingly competitive environment which takes its toll on both mind and body.

In light of these parallels, we have decided to pit some of the strongest talent from each sport against one another, with International Event Riders going head to head with International Rugby Union players. We are honoured to be joined by host Clare Balding OBE who will put equine legends Sir Mark Todd, Pippa Funnell and Lucinda Green MBE through their paces against rugby royalty Geordan Murphy, Matt Powell and Dave Flatman.

The ‘Bits vs Balls Challenge’ will take place in the Champagne Pol Roger Lodge at Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, at 17.30 on Friday 1st September. Only 100 tickets are available (85 available online exclusively and 15 available to purchase on the door), priced at £25.00pp, with all proceeds going to Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony Charity. This fantastic charity aims to support vital research into osteosarcoma and to grant equine related wishes to seriously ill people and their families.

Hannah Francis created the charity not long after her diagnosis with osteosarcoma at the age of just 17 years old in 2015 and it has since raised more than £750,000.

Miles Toulson-Clarke, a trustee of the charity, said:

“Hannah was determined to ensure that those diagnosed in the future with this terrible disease had a much greater prospect of surviving it. She also wanted to give seriously ill people the opportunity to be granted once-in-a-lifetime equestrian experiences, because she drew such inspiration and strength from the generosity of the equestrian community in giving her the same”.

Paul Graham, Business Development Director at Pol Roger Portfolio, said of the event:

‘We are delighted to support such a worthy cause and help towards their mission of #kickingcancersbutt with what promises to be a very entertaining evening!’.
