Attington Stud All-Weather XC

Situated in the heart of ‘Eventing Country’ between Aylesbury and Oxford and within easy reach of the M40 (Junction 7), the Attington Stud, home to Irish international eventer Austin O’Connor aims to capitalise on an already rich equestrian heritage with the development of brand new all-weather Cross Country training facilities.

The Blurb:

The new all-weather cross country facilities themselves, comprise of approximately 4 acres of all-weather cross country schooling, featuring an Andrews Bowen surface- a decision made following 5 years of feedback from riders – all enclosed by Jockey Club approved, plastic fencing.

The schooling area itself consists of a wealth of questions, from banks and mounds, to ditches and trakehners, ranging from BE90 to the top end of Novice. A particular highlight is of course the feature water complex that is situated in the centre of the arena.

With jumps in the water itself and a variety of steps and slopes offering numerous entry and exit combinations, this brand new complex on offer at Attington provides a plethora of training opportunities for horse and rider combinations of all levels.

Rather than aggressively fighting nature and adapting the ground too heavily, the surface has been sympathetically fitted to the pre-existing landscape and undulations of the ground, allowing the course to maintain a natural feel.

The Attington Stud have implemented an online booking system that allows riders to easily choose and book in for their preferred schooling time and instantly pay via PayPal. Bookings are limited to 10 horses per hour in order to maintain a safe and pleasant working environment for schooling and to allow users reasonably free access to the course without too many ‘traffic jams’.

Available for hire £31 per horse, the facilities are also available for clinics and group bookings.

The Review

So much for Monday mornings being a touch painful; after a snowy weekend spent silently envying those eventing in Florida we loaded up with a sense of purpose to visit the new all-weather XC arena at Attington Stud.  10 minutes from J8 of the M40 and the sun was shining – we had found our own eventing haven, complete with “beach” and “sea”!!

While the support crew were scrabbling around for a pair of sunglasses (last used at Aldon ’16) and contemplating bikinis; I tacked up the first contender and went exploring….

The Attington team have taken the large flat area around their water and surfaced it in an egg shape, with racing barriers to allow you to ricochet off gently on the sharper ones!  At first glance there are just lots of jumps from 90cm upwards, hack around a while to familiarise yourself and some good lines and angles become apparent for the more advanced horses.

All the key questions are included, with ditches, trakehners, and a gently undulating quarry type area which can be utilised at all levels.  By retaining the banks either side of the water they have developed natural turning lines to skinnies for more established horses, and created various step complexes which are suitable for all levels. However, gold star goes to the big puddle in the middle – most types of water fence can be found and linked together, from lots of ramps, islands, steps, and drops, to a bounce, and two fences in the water – which was at a good depth.

The XC arena is a 100m hack from the lorry park, where there is also a wash down facility – much appreciated for switching horses quickly and taking them home clean to dream of red & white flags in their sleep. Top marks Attington for a well thought out, user friendly schooling facility.

About the reviewer:

Jodie Seddon was scaling the London Corporate Lawyer ladder at speed when she found her life a bit lacking, so invested in an event horse for her own weekend entertainment.

Fast forward 7 years and she is running a small eventing yard at Stonehill Farm in Buckinghamshire, with an exciting string of horses for 2017 from 1* to Advanced, all home-produced. Oh, and some lawyering still happens from time to time, as she remains a partner at GunnerCooke LLP.
