EVENT RIDER MASTERS – LEG 3, Day 1

Brazil’s Marcio Jorge had a foot perfect start to his preparation ahead of the Olympics in Rio next month when taking a convincing lead in the dressage phase of the Event Rider Masters at the St James’s Place Barbury International Horse Trials today.

Riding the French-bred mare Lissy Mac Wayer, the combination scored a career-best dressage mark of 32.5. Marcio, who will represent the home team in Rio, is based just over the hill from Barbury in Baydon, Wiltshire, with Sally Johnson, the mare’s former owner. Marcio, clearly emotional following their beautiful test, said;

“She is very good and this means a lot.  She’s sensitive to ride, but we always knew she could perform a very good test.   The big atmosphere in the arena today has been a good preparation for Rio and she tried so hard.  It’s great to have her feeling on song ahead of the Olympics.”

Sweden’s Hedvig Wig, riding Chippieh, also produced a strong dressage mark of 35.9.    Hedwig was formerly based with Team GB’s Olympic travelling reserve Pippa Funnell, who was thrilled for the pair.

Pippa said:

“I’m delighted for Hedvig. She is an exceptional rider and thoroughly deserves to be among the leaders in this very competitive ERM competition.”

Andrew Nicholson, who has won the last four CIC three-star competitions at Barbury, lies in third place with his Olympic and World brozne medal winning horse Nereo on 37.6.

Those unable to visit the Barbury International Horse Trials this weekend can view for free all three phases at Eventridermasters.tv from anywhere in the world.   Furthermore, the broadcast will be an enhanced production featuring nine additional camera’s including aerial footage and slow motion providing the viewer with never seen before TV access into the sport of Eventing.
