Barbury International

Barbury’s cross country course travels over rolling downland with much of it utilising old turf gallops. The well drained chalkland promises good going and retains plenty of spring and turf cover even in a dry summer. The cross country course was newly built for the first event in July 2005. Designed by International Course Designer, Captain Mark Phillips, the fences are mostly permanent with some portables.

Barbury Castle refers not to bricks and mortar but to the set of ancient earthworks comprising an Iron Age hill fort, covering about 12 acres, adjacent round barrows, Celtic field systems and 18th-19th Century flint workings.
It is here that the West Saxons are said to have defeated the Britons at the Battle of Beran Byrig in AD 556.

The Last Word...

My favourite CIC…Breathtaking views, snazzy stabling, HUGE entries in every division (prepare to stay for the week), rolling chalk land and immaculately manicured courses. The main arena is a BIG challenge including going up and down the steep bank in show jumping.   Courses never huge but nice challenge for the time of year.  It’s the best!
