Memorable Grand National Moments

With so many to choose from, we relive our stand-out moments from the Grand National and wish all jockeys, horses and their connections a safe ride on Saturday.

The 1956 Grand National that surprised everybody…

The Devon Loch Disaster! Dick Francis aboard HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother’s horse, Devon Loch gallop towards the finish line undoubtedly going to win the race when the horse jumps in the air and falls onto his stomach costing him the win.

The 1977 Grand National when Red Rum made history…

Red Rum gallops into the history books by winning his third Grand National. A record that still stands today. He previously won in 1973 and 1974. 

The 1981 Grand National that saved Bob Champion’s life…

Two years before Bob Champion was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was given between four and seven months to live. He defied all the odds and came back to win aboard Aldaniti. 

The 1993 Grand National “The Race That Never Was”…

A disastrous race which saw 2 false starts, horses tangled in tape, animal protestors and 30 out of 39 riders setting off around the track despite attempts by officials to stop them. The Jockey Club declared the race void, denying Esha Ness and jockey John White the victory with the second fastest time in Grand National history. 

The 2001 Grand National that defeated all but four finishers…

Heavy conditions proved too much for all but four combinations to finish. Over 20 horses fell throughout the course. The race was won by Red Marauder ridden by Richard Guest. The other finishers included AP McCoy, Ruby Walsh and Timmy Murphy. 

The 2010 Grand National that AP McCoy finally wins…

AP McCoy finally wins the famous race on his fifteenth attempt aboard Don’t Push and giving trainer Jonjo O’Neill and owner JP McManus their first wins.
