July’s Book List

This month’s book list includes some inspirational stories from tennis heroes, cocktail and BBQ recipes to make the perfect summer social and great horsey film ideas to unwind after a busy day.

1. The Bounty of Illusionist

The Bounty of Illusionist is a heartfelt ode to the bond between a champion racehorse and the couple who loved and believed in her. During her six-year, 140-race career, “Lusi” earned over a million dollars and set numerous track records. It was as a broodmare, however, that Illusionist would face her biggest challenge and make front-page news.

2. Knowing the Score: My Family and Our Tennis Story

Judy Murray is the ultimate role model for believing in yourself and reaching out to ambition. As a parent, coach, leader, she is an inspiration who has revolutionised British tennis.

From the soggy community courts of Dunblane to the white heat of Centre Court at Wimbledon, Judy Murray’s extraordinary memoir charts the challenges she has faced, from desperate finances and growing pains to entrenched sexism.

We all need a story of ‘yes we can’ to make us believe great things are possible. This is that story.

3. John McEnroe, But Seriously

He is one of the most controversial sportsmen in history and a legend of Open Era tennis. But after reaching the top of his game – what came next? A decade after his international number-one bestseller SERIOUS, John McEnroe is back and ready to talk.

4. Making the Running: A Racing Life

The image of the Derby winner with his leg in plaster was broadcast around the world. Alongside Mill Reef stood a baby-faced man who had won the Arc, the King George, the Eclipse, and now the Derby. He trained for the Queen and Queen Mother; and Lester Piggott, Willie Carson and Frankie Dettori all rode for him, but where had he come from and how had he got there? Ian Balding’s story is one of heartbreaking loss and outrageous good luck.

5. The Duchess: The Untold Story

It is a rich and remarkable story that has never been properly told – indeed, it is one of the most extraordinary, star-crossed love stories of the past fifty years.
