Morning on the gallops & afternoon at Cheltenham

On Friday 11 November 2016, the Committee of City Saddles is offering the ultimate day of horse-racing.

The day includes a morning on the gallops at Graeme McPherson’s yard, Martins Hill near Stow on the Wold in Gloucestershire followed by an afternoon of racing at the home of jump racing, Cheltenham Racecourse for the their annual Countryside Day, part of The Open. Where, in addition to racing, there will be a range of displays and demonstrations covering many equine and other country pursuits.

Approximate timings:

–           8.15am         Arrive at Martins Hill, Nr Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, GL54 1JH

–           8.15am         Watch second lot of horses training on the gallops 

–           9.30am         Breakfast and talk through the Cheltenham race card to try to pick some winners!

–           10.30           Tour around the stables to meet some of the horses

–           11.15am       Depart Martin’s Hill and head for Cheltenham Racecourse

–           1.05pm         First Race at Cheltenham 

Cost: Guests attending the morning on the gallops are asked to make a minimum donation of £20 to Spinal Research. Donate here

Entry to Cheltenham Racecourse, guests are advised to book their own tickets to the Club/TattsEnclosure either in advance or on the gate, which is about £25. Book here.

Further transport information: 

McPherson Racing is at Martins Hill, Stow on the Wold, Glos GL54 1JH. Directions will be circulated to those who book onto the event. By car, it is about 2 hours from central/west London. The nearest station is Kingham (direct train from Paddington, about 2 miles away), if you let us know if you are coming by train, we can arrange to pick up guests from the station and transport them to the yard.

Whilst guests will need to make their own way to Cheltenham Racecourse, car sharing can be arranged for those who are coming by train or taxi, just let us know with your RSVP if you will need a lift from the yard to the racecourse so we can try to allocated this. 

From Cheltenham Racecourse, the nearest station is Cheltenham Spa (2.7 miles) which has a direct service to London Paddington in just over 2 hours. 

If anyone would like to travel down the night before, our host has offered to provide recommendations for some very good local pubs, b&bs and hotels, all within a 10 minute drive of the yard. One word of warning – because it is a popular Cheltenham meeting, they do get booked up, so guests would be advised to book early if they are staying overnight.
