Muck out for free & discover the benefits

Some find it therapeutic, others find it a chore, however you view the task of mucking out horses, few would dispute the fact that it keeps you fit and it can keep you sane.

Recognising the cognitive benefits of this relatively simple task, Dee Dee Wilkinson is offering the chance to muck out for free at her livery and trekking centre in Dartmoor.

Not only does she want to create a reason for people to visit her idyllic farm above Ashburton near Poundsgate during the winter, she also wants to encourage people to get fit and enjoy time spent with horses.

She said:

“It might seem strange that we are encouraging people to muck out for free, but it really is great exercise and it’s very gratifying too. There’s something very satisfying about turning a dirty stable into a clean one with perfect banks and a happy horse munching on his hay, until the morning when the task of cleaning him out starts all over again!”

Dee Dee is encouraging anyone needing an excuse to get out doors during the winter to consider a trip to Babeny, whether or not they have spent time with horses before.

She said:

“We’ll teach them everything they need to know about mucking out, including how to do it so that you are not straining your back. We’ll also show them how to move comfortably around the horses. The more people that are given access to how therapeutic time spent with horses can be, the better in our minds, whether its simply to increase fitness levels, or to switch off from everyday life for an hour or so.”

At Babeny Farm Dee Dee runs a busy trekking centre, which is closed during the winter months. Horses are put out on livery, although they remain at the farm. There are also several livery horses too.  Along side the horses; Dee Dee also has a herd of pedigree South Devons.

She said:

“There is plenty going on here with lots of opportunity for people to work outside in the fresh air, along side me or one of my staff. It’s a wonderful place to be, with a happy team, and a warm area to sit and have a coffee if the weather gets really bad too.”
