Tradition welcomes innovation for hunting safety

Tradition dies very hard in the hunting fields of Leicestershire.  It is a strength that has maintained Britain’s hunts in fine heart since the restrictions of the Hunting Act 2004. Part of this tradition is also a weakness with the wearing of top hats and traditional hunting hats, which have offered very little head protection in the event of a fall.

A major new initiative to encourage the hunting fraternity to change to modern safety protective headwear has come from the Quorn Hunt, one of the oldest and most traditional foxhound packs in the shires.

The professional huntsman for 14 years, Peter Collins, said that he and his family were deeply affected by the tragic death of a local subscriber in a hunting accident. He said his son asked him the question ‘Dad, is your hat safe?’ He discussed this question with Peter Morritt, former Hon. Secretary of the Quorn.

The Quorn Hunt felt that they had a duty of care to provide the best possible headwear for their staff.  The issue was raised with Charles Owen, who are acknowledged as being one of the major manufacturers of safety riding hats in the country.  With their expertise and extensive input from Peter Collins, a riding hat called the QH Hunter, bearing the BSI kitemark and with a harness has been developed.  It is modelled on the traditional deep crown cap used by most huntsmen, many masters and subscribers.

Peter Collins said,

‘I have been wearing the hat on hound exercise and Autumn Hunting, I find it extremely comfortable and have had many favourable comments from our hunt subscribers and other huntsmen’.

The QH Hunter is available exclusively and directly from the Quorn Hunt at a price of £250.  They are available in black, navy, grey or brown.  Hats may be tried and fitted by appointment at the Quorn Hunt Kennels or may also be purchased on line from the Quorn Hunt website.  The hats are made to order with a delivery time of approximately 3-4 weeks.

Peter Morritt said,

“We have sold many hats locally but quite a few have gone further afield.  They have mainly been sold to dyed in the wool traditionalists who have made the decision to ditch the top hat or traditional hat but wanted something that fulfils all the modern safety standards and has the style which is loved by people who ride to hounds.

We all know it is so easy to have a fall  and if through the Quorn Hunt’s action in taking this initiative we save one person from having a life changing injury, our efforts have been worthwhile.”
