Hair raising scheme raises money for Redwings

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is inviting supporters to embrace their lockdown hairstyles and help raise money for horses in need at the same time.

With its visitor centres closed and community fundraising events cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, the charity – which is 100% funded by donations – is urging people to get behind a new online fundraiser called the Mane Event.

The fun initiative asks supporters to donate the cost of their usual hairdresser or barber appointments to Redwings, send in a photo of their lockdown locks, and the charity will match them with their lookie-likie horse or donkey living at the Sanctuary.

Every participant is then sent a photo of their four-legged doppelganger to share with their friends and family on social media.

All the money raised from the hair-raising campaign will go towards the care of the 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules living at the Sanctuary across the UK.

Debbie Scott, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said:

“Sadly, the pandemic has significantly impacted our ability to fundraise and we estimate that we will have lost £150,000 in income by the end of June just from our visitor centres being closed alone. Our aim with the Mane Event is to not just raise vital funds, but also to provide our supporters a way of continuing to get involved in Redwings even though they can’t visit us currently, as well as hopefully raising a smile! We’ve had some fantastic photos sent to us already of some truly crazy lockdown hairstyles and we’ve really enjoyed searching the Sanctuary for their best horsey hair twins. We really hope more people will continue to join in and help us be here for horses in desperate need, now and into the future.”
