Hartpury equestrians excel across Europe

The summer season has seen a flying start for Hartpury student showjumpers and eventers as they compete at international events across Europe.

Hartpury Equine Academy students have been reaping the rewards of a winter of training and hard work with their horses. Eventing scholar Anna Horton, who is currently completing the last year of her Sports Coaching degree, and her horse Classic Affair took home first place in the Intermediate at Hambleden Horse Trials finishing on her dressage score of 24.1.

The pair also finished second in the Novice at Portman and the results put them in good stead for the rest of the season having been long listed for the European CIC2* Championships. Anna has also been competing Fair Play III and Baroness II, finishing sixth at Portman in the Novice and contesting the Advanced at Belton respectively.

17-year-old A Level student Katinka Brogaard has been flying the flag for Hartpury in Germany competing at the Eschweiler Jumping Festival. Contesting the six year old classes with Galveston G she picked up three wins, including the 1.35m Grand Prix class and a second in the other 1.35m Grand Prix finishing just 0.08s behind the winner.

Before heading to Germany Brogaard was competing at Bonheiden in Belgium, having success with five year old Hotline. Katinka said:

“This is my first individual international Grand Prix win in Eschweiler and it has been such a great experience to compete against world renowned Olympic riders such as Bertram Allan, Dennis Lynch and Rodrigo Pessoa.

“After buying Hotline and Galveston last summer they are both showing great potential and I am hoping to continue contesting the five and six year old classes from July once I’ve completed my exams.

“The Equine Academy has been very helpful and having Corrine [Bracken]’s help has made a big difference to my performance and results. The horses are now having a break while I focus on my A Levels; Hartpury have always been very understanding about my competition commitments and really help me catch up on my academic work.”

Joining Brogaard in Eschweiler was Equine Business Management degree student Isabella Casgrain. As the only Canadian at the event she managed to clinch her first placing on the continent, a fifth place in the International Silver tour.

She then headed to the FEI show in Chepstow, Wales, taking fourth place in the CSI 1* Gold Tour with her nine year old horse Arezzo. The pair also managed to place in the money, taking eleventh spot, in the CSI* Gold Tour Grand Prix Final.

Isabelle said:

“I can’t believe the amazing few weeks we have had together and how much fun it has been. Arezzo is the best partner anyone could ask for and I’m excited to see what the summer has in store for us as I hope to complete our first 1.40m together.”

Thelma Biancardi was representing Hartpury in an International show in Saint Lo, France and claimed tenth spot in the CSI* 125 on her new horse who she’s only been riding for two months!

Equine Performance degree student Kieran Masters headed out to Spain for the Sunshine Tour at the beginning of the year with horse Tiziano. Contesting the 1.30m classes he took twelfth spot, from 70 starters, and a third place in a class of 40 among several double clears. Michaella Masters also contested the Sunshine Tour with two horses, competing at 1.10m and 1.20m.

Back on English soil Georgia Cabb, who is currently studying for her degree in Equine Business Management, was contesting the 1.15-1.20m classes at the Welsh Masters bringing home a win, a second, two thirds and thirteenth with her horse Casper.

Georgia said:

“I’m so pleased and proud of Casper and the results we have gained. All of the training I have received through the academy has helped so much and certainly contributed to the results I have gained. We’ve also recently had some double clears at 1.30m which I never would have thought I’d done before being in the Academy!”
