In the hot-seat with Max Charlton

Max Charlton is one of Britain’s most exciting talents in the sport of Polo.

He is one of just three players in the country to play off a handicap of seven goals – an exceptional feat. Max has been playing around the world since the tender age of 15 and is an established member of the England squad. This year he was appointed as Land Rover’s first ever polo player ambassador, which means the lucky dude gets a free car too! Eleanore Kelly caught up with the dashing 25 year old to find out more about the sport, his superstitions, crazy nights out and the ladies in his life.

How old were you when you were introduced to Polo?

I was 12 years old and the architect doing up my parents’ house had a low goal polo club and he invited me to come along for a lesson. I was already riding and in the Pony Club but knew nothing about polo.

Was it love from the outset?

The day I was introduced to it, that was it, I was hooked. It was my saviour when I was growing up because I was really dyslexic and struggled with school but this was something I was good at. Luckily my parents were very supportive an encouraging and were happy for me to be home tutored. I would spend the morning studying and the afternoon playing polo.

When did you get your first big break?

By the age of 15, I was going away for two months at a time to play polo, it could have been a disaster as I gave up everything to focus on polo. When I was 17 I was offered a job with a successful 15 goal team. I’d had a bit of an average run and then someone got injured and I filled in. As a team, we went on to win two tournaments.

What or who inspires you to do what you do?

My coach, John Halswell. If I ever need to make a change or choice about something in my game, I always ask him.

How many ponies do you keep?

I like to keep 16 horses and every year I sell the bottom two. I’m always on the lookout and generally go to Australia or New Zealand to buy.

What are you looking for in a polo pony?

Everyone has a type. Mine is about 15 hands and stocky, so ideally that would be a Thoroughbred mixed with a polo pony. I don’t buy them to produce, they are always the finished job. They have to be good in the brain so that they can cope with travel and change of management. You certainly don’t want them wired.

Polo is all about speed and agility and I look for a horse with a small stride as they are generally more agile and more responsive. You don’t want a horse with a high action. I like to see their hooves skim the ground rather than push off the ground.

How do you find them and what do they cost?

It’s not easy. I make my living entirely out of playing so I need to find the best I can which costs in excess of £100,000. The very best players in the world, of which there are six to eight, get the pick of the best horses whilst I have to go out there and find them myself

Best pony?

Pixie – she’s an Australian polo pony by a thoroughbred stallion and out of a polo pony mare. She’s totally my type. Small and stocky and I would ride her two or three times for a major match.

What can’t you live without?

My phone and my Range Rover Sport. I love it. It’s perfect for my lifestyle: tough, rugged but stylish. It’s a brand synonymous with the equestrian world.

Who do you call the most?

My mum and my girlfriend.

Where’s the best place to party?

I’ve partied in some amazing places all around the world but Argentina definitely has the best nightlife.

Favourite place to play?

Definitely Guards Polo Club. It’s my home ground and just a few minutes from where I live.

What is your most indispensable piece of kit?

I love my playing saddles and always take really good care of them.

If it wasn’t for Polo what would you be doing with your life?

Something with cars.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I’d like to be really good at golf. Most professional polo players seem to be great at it but I’m just not!

Do you have any superstitions?

I always follow the same routine before a game, right down to the way I put my kit on. I’ll spin both my kit bag 10 times before getting ready.

How do you relax?

I don’t get much time away from Polo but I like to keep it low key. So going to the cinema with my girlfriend is a popular choice. The last thing I saw was Suicide Squad but my favourite film is probably Space Balls.

What would your perfect weekend involve?

Playing a good practice game with no pressure and just enjoying the horses and the company. I like just being around the stables. Then going for dinner with friends- probably to Piccolino’s near where I live in Windsor. I do love the odd crazy night out though.

What do you miss most when you’re away from home?

Polo is not always as glamourous as people think, I often spend 18 hours a day in the hotel in between games. So I love coming home and the one thing I really look forward to is a roast dinner.

What is your greatest achievement?

Winning the Coronation Cup, which is the biggest International in England.

What’s the next big goal?

I’d love to win the Camara. It’s the second biggest tournament in Argentina.
