Love horses? Give carrots this International Carrot Day!

Donations of carrots are being gratefully received at Redwings Horse Sanctuary as it gears up for International Carrot Day this April.

Carrot Drop Stops are cropping-up at all five of the charity’s visitor centres nationwide from now until Monday 10th April in honour of International Carrot Day.

International Carrot Day is celebrated every year on 4th April to raise awareness of the versatile and healthy vegetable. Redwings is inviting supporters to celebrate by donating carrots to be distributed among its rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules, but also to donate knitted or handcrafted carrots that can be sold in one of the charity’s many fundraising sales held throughout the year.

Alternatively, visitors can give £1, which could not only fund a tasty treat for a rescued horse but also help in a variety of ways, including one day of antibiotics for a poorly horse, two days of medication for an arthritic horse or a set of disposable overalls to be used by the care teams.

Gemma Walpole, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said:

“Give a bag of carrots, create some carrot-themed crafts or simply donate £1 for a tasty treat – there are so many ways to celebrate the humble carrot and what better way to use up those round £1 coins before they are phased out then to help towards the care of our rescued residents?

“While they are a nutritious snack, it’s important to remember that carrots should only be given to horses and donkeys as occasional treats so make sure to leave your carrot donations at our special Carrot Drop Stops and our teams will make sure our grateful residents get to enjoy them in the most healthy and responsible way.”

From Friday 31st March to Monday 3rd April, Redwings’ visitor centres will also have a carrot cake offer in their cafes. But that’s not all, visitors will be able to get their hands on recipe cards with instructions on how to make their very own delicious carrot cake at home – as well as a horse and donkey-friendly version for their four-legged friends!

The celebrations will end on Monday 10th April when each visitor centre will host special carrot-themed activities demonstrating how the generously donated treats will be enjoyed by Redwings’ horses and donkeys.

Redwings has five visitor centres located in Norfolk, Essex, Warwickshire and Angus. Each is open throughout the year, every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm (closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). Entry is completely free and dogs on leads are welcome too.
