Walk the course twice

Although I’d already memorised the course pics that had been put up online in advance, nothing replaces the real thing. I walked it once with my trainer on the Tuesday, and then again after my dressage on the Wednesday. Make note of your alternatives in case something doesn’t go to plan out on course, and check out where you can shave off those seconds – it’ll really make a difference over such a long course. Oh and if you’re feeling sick by this point there’s plenty of 4* fences around to make yours look more jumpable!

Embrace the Support Crew

I’m not saying everybody needs an entire entourage, but if you’ve got keen friends who want to come and make the most of your achievements with you then let them. I was totally overwhelmed by the support I received – we got utterly battered by the horrendous weather, but the unwavering positivity from my wonderful friends still made for an amazing trip away. We had Team Tally t-shirts, cakes, even bandanas for the dogs! Life really is too short (especially where horses are concerned) so just embrace the experience and make some memories.

Coming soon in Part 4: Capturing the memories and not forgetting why you are there.
