Positive Thoughts with…Alice Plunkett

This week’s positive thoughts come from Alice Plunkett, presenter of jump racing on ITV and the only female to have ridden at both Badminton Horse Trials and over the Grand National course at Aintree. See Alice’s tip for this weekend’s Aintree showdown below.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I’m a morning person so I hop out of bed between 6-6.30. I love the quiet time before everyone else appears. It’s my most productive time of day.

What’s the best wellbeing tip you’ve ever learnt?

I hate the expression me-time but I love cold water swimming and I have been in the sea as much as I could this winter. I even swam on Christmas Eve!

What’s something that has inspired or touched you lately?

Rachel Blackmore’s performance at Cheltenham. Not just on the track but how she handled herself off the track and how she handles the female angle in the press. She has an extraordinary ability to combine femininity with phenomenal toughness.

What’s the quality you rate most in others? And in yourself?

In others kindness, and in myself being a team player.

Do you have a well being role model? Who and why?

I’m not very good at my own well being but it would be David Fox-Pitt, William’s cousin. He has written a book Positiverosity: 7 Golden Principles, which is a must read for everyone. He is the most extraordinarily positive person.

What movie, book, blog, or article affected your life for the better recently?

I watched the Hangover movie with my boys during lockdown and properly belly laughed and loved sharing an adult humour movie with my boys.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration at work: the discipline of my colleagues, and the amount they know, the bravery of the jockeys, the passion for the horses and the whole experience of going racing brings me enormous energy.

How do you switch off? What do you do for me-time?

My switch off is I go to the Outer Hebrides every year for 2 weeks. It’s completely off grid with no wifi and I have never missed a year since I was 5. It is definitely my happy place.

What’s your hero product in times of stress or anxiety?

Vodka – a standard vodka and tonic but with 2 Slimline tonics so I don’t get too pissed!

Who would you most like to sit next to at a dinner party?

John Francome and Sir Mark Prescott

If you could have a superhero power, what would it be?

Not to eat so much

What would be a good theme tune for your life?

Anything by Coldplay

Do you have a good tip for the Grand National?

Secret Reprieve if he gets in.
