10 things you didn’t know about Willa Newton

After a slow start to the season, due to the frustrating Spring weather, the 2018 season has now well and truly kicked off for the 28 year old Leicestershire-based Willa Newton.

Her late entry at Little Downham on 1st June paid off with Chance Remark (Austen) leading from start to finish to win the Advanced, in what ended up being the final prep run for his first 4 star international target at Luhmuhlen this week.

Willa’s up and coming horses, including last years’s Hartpury 2 star winner, Moonlight Dance S and her younger horses like Cock a Doodle Doo and Quba have all put in consistent performances so far at their levels.

Here at The Gaitpost we’ve put together a few facts you may not have known about Willa……

What was your very first equestrian competition (where, when, how old were you, what memories do you have of it, what was the result)?

I don’t think I was very old and it was probably at our local show in the 12.2 and under on a brilliant pony we had called Silver.

If you had not gone into horse riding, what would you like to have done?

I did a degree at Leeds in Business management and loved it. I also love sport and follow many different sports so something where I could have combined the two – sports management or marketing, or something like that!

What is your life motto?

Never give up! I think as long as you still enjoy what you do, you never know what might be around the corner.

When were you most happy on a horse?

When I won Blenheim 8/9 year old championships, back in 2016, with Caja 20.

What is the most embarrassing thing to have ever happened to you while riding?

I thinking falling off in the warm up at Badminton was a particular low point. Of course, it was made worse because there were a lot of people around the warm up too!

You travel a lot with your competing. What is your favourite city and why?

We have been to some spectacular places with the eventing but I think my favourite city would have to be Copenhagen. I went to visit a friend who was living there at the time. I had no expectations of the place but I loved it!

Who is your favourite athlete?

Not particularly original, but it would have to be Mo Farah, as well as Usain Bolt.

Secret Crush?

Cillian Murphy

What is your favourite film or TV programme?

Anything easy to watch – if I had to pick a series though, it would have to be Peaky Blinders.

Do any of your horses remind you of a famous person?

My six year old Cock a doodle Doo (Paul) – he is very naughty but at the same time very talented and finds life very easy! I think he would be a footballer – David Beckham someone like that!
